  • Re: the SAT stories above: students wanting to assess how their scores compare with those of others can do so by looking at their percentile rankings. These overall national SAT scores are disappointing, especially given that such test takers generally comprise the upper half of all high school “graduates” and that the standards on which the tests are based have been lowered; but the SAT retains potential value if used as in some states in Canada and Australia, for scaling purposes, as an indicator of the strength of the group among whom Mr Davis, for example, gained his straight As — in a stronger group, he likely wouldn’t have, and at Cornell he likely won’t. But SAT scores are becoming less reliable predictors of college success, if for no other reason that the questions and their correct answers are now circulating for sale in China and Korea, students from where are now flying in to take the tests in centres like Los Alamitos High School, where one of my pupils watched a Chinese student pull out his cell phone and copy the correct answers, including a prewritten essay responding to that day’s essay prompt, while the proctor sat at the front of the room staring into his cell phone, too engrossed to even detect the blatant cheating.
